Home secretary targets internet extremism

The home secretary has outlined plans to crack down on websites which promote extremism, in an effort to expose radical terrorism groups and prevent people from being led into them. Jacqui Smith says she'll use the technology to stop "vulnerable people" being "groomed for violent extremism".

There has been growing evidence that terrorists were using the internet to spread messages and recruit.

She plans to work with service providers and learn from past lessons about protecting children from paedophiles to inform the way they'll tackle extremism.

Next year the government will provide more than £500m to fund security and counter-terrorism measures, rising to nearly £600m over the following two years.

Figures show the youngest are more easily led and also more technically proficient and actively involved with the internet, making them the most vulnerable.

Mrs Smith plans to block dubious websites and inform the public on the aforementioned dangers while working hand in hand with the Muslim community.
