Microsoft release security update

15/02/07 – Microsoft has released February's security update with 12 patches that fix 20 vulnerabilities. The update is part of Microsoft's monthly security update that is released on the second Tuesday of every month.
The patches cover problems with Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Internet Explorer and Microsoft's Malware Protection engine. Six of the patches are listed as critical, the highest level of urgency the company can attach to an update, the other six are listed as important, the second highest rating.

The majority of patches prevent a vulnerability allowing Remote Code Execution, this is a weakness that allows hackers to take control of the program and alter or delete data. Other patches prevent Elevation of Privilege; this is where somebody can use the vulnerability to access secure parts of a system without authorisation.

Window XP users should've received the updates automatically, however the security update is available for download from Microsoft's security page, accessible through their website. There were no patches for Vista, the latest version of Windows released last month, in the update.
